The UK Government's interpretation of the WEEE Directive (Directive 2002/96/EC and 2007 (SI 3454)) imposes a Duty upon the holder of waste electrical and electronic equipment to employ suitably qualified persons in it's disposal. Additional limitations, introduced with the revised Duty of Care regulations (2011) stipulate that the waste heirarchy should be considered as part of a Life-Cycle management strategy for all wastes. As a result, recycling companies engaging in the recycling of waste computer hardware need to consider re-use as a priority, followed by recovery for obsolete hardware. However, neither address the need to ensure the protection of confidential Data, an issue covered by the CPNI and BS EN 15713, and derived from regulating bodies seperate from the Waste Management sector.
